Rocket Report: Alpha Block 2 launching this summer; Falcon hits booster landing milestone

▼ Summary

– SpaceX aims to make its Falcon 9 rocket obsolete through its Starship program, signaling the potential end of the Falcon flight era.
– Firefly Aerospace plans to launch the upgraded Alpha Block 2 rocket late this summer, following a successful return to flight in March.
– The Alpha Block 2 features stretched first and second stages, plus upgrades to avionics, batteries, and thermal protection.
– The upgrades are intended to improve Alpha’s reliability after the vehicle suffered two failures and two partial failures in its first six launches.
– Firefly has not disclosed the customer for the Flight 8 mission but is planning two more launches after it this year.

One of the most fascinating aspects of SpaceX’s enduring legacy is that, even after 25 years of operation and solidifying its position as the dominant launch provider of the modern era, it continues to act as a disruptive force in the aerospace industry. While the Falcon 9 remains the world’s most frequently used rocket and a benchmark for reusability, the company is now actively working to render it obsolete through its ambitious Starship program. Stephen’s recent newsletter piece highlights a compelling notion: we are likely past the peak of the Falcon era of flight.

Firefly prepares for upgraded Alpha rocket debut. Firefly Aerospace is targeting the late summer for the first flight of its enhanced Alpha Block 2 rocket, according to Space News. During a May 4 earnings call discussing first-quarter financial results, Firefly CEO Jason Kim confirmed that the company is moving forward with the upgraded vehicle following a successful return to flight of the original Alpha configuration in March.

Block 2 is on the horizon. The company first unveiled the Block 2 version of Alpha in January, featuring elongated first and second stages along with improvements to avionics, batteries, and the thermal protection system. Firefly stated these upgrades are designed to boost vehicle reliability, a critical need given that the rocket experienced two outright failures and two partial failures across its first six launches. While Kim did not reveal the customer for the upcoming Flight 8 mission, he indicated that the company plans to conduct two additional launches after that before the year ends.
