AltStore PAL, the alternative app marketplace for iOS devices in the European Union and Japan, is now integrating with the social web’s fediverse. This move allows users on platforms like Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky to interact directly with apps that developers choose to federate via the explore.alt.store website. According to creator Riley Testut, interactions such as likes and comments from these social platforms will appear within the AltStore PAL interface itself, creating a bridge between social media engagement and app discovery.
Users can now sign into AltStore PAL using their existing Mastodon or Bluesky accounts. This integration aims to enhance how people find new applications. “Our goal with adding fediverse features to AltStore is to improve the discoverability of apps by making them shareable on the social web,” Testut explained. Looking ahead, the vision is for apps to gain native support within the ActivityPub protocol, potentially allowing them to appear as standard objects in user feeds, similar to posts or articles.
The store’s launch was made possible by regulatory shifts. AltStore PAL became available in the EU in 2024 following Apple’s compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that the company permit third-party app stores. The marketplace later expanded to Japan after analogous legislation took effect there, with plans to reach Australia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
Coinciding with this social integration, AltStore PAL is introducing three new applications designed for the fediverse ecosystem. These include Loops, an open-source platform for short-form videos; PeerTube, a decentralized video-sharing service; and iPhanpy, a client for accessing the Mastodon network. These apps can be found on a redesigned Sources page within the store, which now organizes software into curated collections. Categories such as “popular,” “indie gems,” and a dedicated “fediverse favorites” section help users navigate the growing catalog.
