OnePlus may be winding down its global presence, but software updates for existing devices are far from over. However, the experience will look distinctly different starting with Android 17. The company has confirmed that its signature OxygenOS skin is being phased out worldwide, replaced entirely by Oppo’s ColorOS. This transition applies to all active OnePlus devices, including those in India, where the brand insists it will continue operating despite reliable reports to the contrary.
In a statement, OnePlus explained the rationale behind the shift: “As part of an operational adjustment to our software strategy, following the official release of ColorOS 17, users globally with existing OnePlus devices that fall within the eligible upgrade scope will have the option to voluntarily update to the latest ColorOS. This enables us to streamline software development, accelerate update delivery, improve software quality, and make better use of our shared engineering and R&D capabilities.”
At first glance, abandoning OxygenOS feels jarring. For years, it was a cornerstone of the OnePlus identity, prized for its near-stock Android experience and smooth performance. But in practice, the move makes long-term sense. With Oppo stepping back from the OnePlus brand, unifying the software stack simplifies the engineering burden and ensures that existing hardware continues to receive timely updates. It is worth remembering that OnePlus devices sold in China have been running ColorOS for years already.
In truth, OxygenOS has gradually morphed into ColorOS over recent generations. The remaining differences were subtle: OxygenOS tended to be less aggressive about killing background apps and was generally better tuned for global market behaviors. Those distinctions are now vanishing.
For older models that won’t qualify for the Android 17 update, OnePlus will continue offering “maintenance support” on their current OxygenOS versions. But for newer devices, switching to ColorOS will be necessary to receive any form of continued support. The company does note that rollback versions to OxygenOS will be made available for users who prefer the older software, though the specific versions eligible for rollback will be announced later.
OnePlus has pledged to honor its update commitments fully. All existing devices will continue to receive “software updates, security patches, and applicable support” as originally promised.
This isn’t just a OnePlus story. Realme, another brand under the Oppo umbrella, has also confirmed it will adopt ColorOS starting with Android 17. The consolidation across Oppo’s ecosystem is now nearly complete.
