X is defending the right to anonymity for its users against Andrew and Tristan Tate, the far-right influencers and accused human traffickers, who are trying to expose the people criticizing them online.
The Tate brothers filed a lawsuit last year against the owners of more than a dozen social media accounts, several of which were run pseudonymously. They alleged these accounts were part of a “Conspiratorial Plot” to defame them. When a Florida court ruled the case couldn’t proceed against unidentified defendants, the Tates amended their complaint to target the users they could name. They also filed a separate complaint against X, demanding the platform reveal the identities of the anonymous account holders.
