OpenAI is developing an AI-powered hiring platform called the OpenAI Jobs Platform, set to launch by mid-2026.
– The platform aims to match companies with workers and will include a dedicated track for small businesses and local governments.
– This move puts OpenAI in direct competition with LinkedIn, despite LinkedIn’s co-founder being an early OpenAI investor and Microsoft being OpenAI’s largest backer.
– OpenAI will also offer AI fluency certifications through its OpenAI Academy, with a pilot launching in late 2025 and a goal to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.
– The company acknowledges AI’s potential to disrupt jobs but aims to help people gain AI skills and connect them with companies needing those abilities.

OpenAI is entering the competitive hiring marketplace with a new AI-powered platform designed to connect businesses and job seekers, positioning itself as a potential rival to established networks like LinkedIn. The product, known as the OpenAI Jobs Platform, is scheduled for release by mid-2026 according to company representatives. This initiative represents a significant expansion beyond the firm’s widely recognized ChatGPT service, signaling a broader ambition to develop practical, real-world AI applications.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, introduced the platform in a recent blog post, emphasizing its goal to “use AI to help find the perfect matches between what companies need and what workers can offer.” A specialized pathway will be available for small businesses and local governments seeking qualified AI professionals. This move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to diversify its offerings under Simo’s leadership, which may also include a browser and social media application in the future.

Notably, the new hiring service could place OpenAI in direct competition with LinkedIn, a platform co-founded by Reid Hoffman, one of OpenAI’s earliest backers. LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, which remains the AI lab’s largest investor. Both companies are now investing heavily in AI-driven recruitment tools, suggesting a growing convergence in their strategic goals.

In parallel, OpenAI is developing a certification program through its OpenAI Academy to evaluate and credential varying levels of “AI fluency” among professionals. A pilot for these certifications is planned for late 2025. The company has partnered with Walmart, one of the world’s largest employers, and aims to certify 10 million Americans by the end of the decade.

This effort comes amid rising concerns from tech leaders about AI’s disruptive impact on employment. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has projected that AI could eliminate up to half of all entry-level white-collar jobs before 2030. Simo acknowledged these risks in her announcement, noting that while OpenAI cannot prevent workforce disruption, it can help by upskilling individuals and improving their access to relevant job opportunities.

These initiatives are part of OpenAI’s commitment to a White House-led effort to promote AI literacy. Sam Altman and other tech executives are scheduled to meet with political leaders to discuss the future of artificial intelligence and its role in the economy.
