Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches day-one on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, PC

▼ Summary

– Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set in a future North and South Korea conflict, with a single-player campaign featuring Captain Price and Private Park, plus DMZ and traditional multiplayer modes.
– This is the first Call of Duty announced for a Switch console, with the Switch 2 version handled in-house and by Digital Legends; it also skips PS4 and Xbox One for current-gen consoles.
– The game removes the bloom accuracy system, using a rebuilt animation system where visible recoil directly determines bullet direction for deterministic aiming.
– Multiplayer additions include physics-based interactables, volumetric smoke, a “Gunny” system, multiple Prestige paths, and a dynamic “Kill Block” mode with over 500 map combinations.
– Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23rd, developed by Infinity Ward with 10 supporting studios, but will not be available on Game Pass.

Microsoft has officially unveiled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with Infinity Ward leading development for Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The story unfolds in a future conflict between North and South Korea, splitting the experience across a campaign starring Captain Price and new recruit Private Park, the DMZ extraction shooter mode now featuring dynamic weather, and traditional multiplayer.

An Activision representative confirmed to us that the campaign is strictly single-player only, a relief after the widely criticized “built for co-op” approach in Black Ops 7. Apologies for the delay in clarifying that , the campaign is indeed solo focused.

This marks the first time in franchise history that Call of Duty launches on a Switch console, despite Microsoft’s 2023 promise to bring the series to Nintendo’s hybrid platform “day and date.” Black Ops 7 skipped it entirely, releasing only on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The last simultaneous Nintendo release was Ghosts in 2013. The Switch 2 version is developed in-house, with help from Digital Legends, the team behind Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile.

Modern Warfare 4 also becomes the first mainline entry to skip PS4 and Xbox One, targeting current-gen consoles exclusively. Press materials promise “a new technical benchmark for the series,” boasting “greater scale, fidelity, density, responsiveness and immersion.” The PC version offers “more ways to tune performance, visual fidelity, responsiveness and customisation,” with satellite studio Beenox handling those efforts, as they did for Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.

Where does your hype meter sit for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4? Hot , properly excited (21%), Warm , cautiously optimistic (48%), Cold , not interested in the slightest (32%). That’s from 686 votes.

A standout change: MW4 abandons the bloom accuracy system used by nearly every FPS on the market. Instead of bullets landing randomly within a circle, they land deterministically based on where the gun is actually pointing. Infinity Ward rebuilt the animation system so visible recoil is properly simulated and tied directly to bullet direction at any moment. As a long-time Counter-Strike player, it’s fascinating to consider whether this will let esports pros counteract recoil more effectively through mouse or stick movement, and how noticeable the new ballistics system will be overall.

Other multiplayer updates include more physics-based interactables like fire hydrants, CS2-style volumetric smoke, more grounded movement, a “Gunny” system that suggests weapon customisation and loadout changes, multiple Prestige paths, and “Apex” attachments. Alongside 12 core 6v6 maps and dedicated small or large maps for different modes, there’s a “dynamic battleground” called Kill Block that uses different slices of multiplayer maps to keep gameplay fresh, with over 500 possible combinations. This concept echoes a procedurally-generated Counter-Strike: Global Offensive map from modder Orelstealth, covered by 3kliksphillip back in 2021.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23rd, roughly five months away. While Infinity Ward takes the lead, ten additional studios are credited, including Raven, Sledgehammer, and Treyarch. Notably, the game will not come to Game Pass, as Microsoft rethinks its subscription strategy.

So far, I’m intrigued. But as always, we’ll need hands-on time to truly gauge how Infinity Ward pushes tech forward on its first ninth-generation console exclusive, and how the game performs on the relatively less powerful Switch 2 hardware.

*Also known as Modern Warfare 사. Don’t confuse Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (the 23rd COD game) with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (the fourth COD game).
