On a sweltering day in South Africa, female southern pied babblers lose their mental edge. These medium-sized black-and-white birds are trying to reach tasty mealworms hidden behind a clear plastic barrier. When temperatures are mild, they quickly learn to simply go around the wall. But as the heat rises, they stubbornly peck at the barrier instead, unable to adjust their strategy.
This experiment is part of a growing wave of research revealing that extreme heat clouds animal cognition. During hot spells, birds struggle with learning tasks, dogs bite more frequently, and chamois , goat-like mountain dwellers , become more aggressive. The consequences go beyond a grumpy pet. If animals cannot stay sharp enough to find food or evade predators, their survival prospects dim, explains Amanda Ridley, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Western Australia and coauthor of the pied babbler study.
As climate change makes heat waves more frequent, such cognitive lapses across the animal kingdom could ripple through entire ecosystems, endangering already vulnerable species. Pollinators may forget which flowers to visit, threatening crops and wild plants. Birds that cannot forage efficiently may fail to feed their young. On a warming planet, a clear head is increasingly essential. “A changing climate means that your ability to behaviorally adapt is even more important,” Ridley says.
