Nvidia’s controversial DLSS 5 AI rendering technology is expanding its hardware compatibility, though the rollout comes with significant caveats regarding user customization. While the feature was initially slated for an exclusive debut on the latest RTX 50 GPUs, Nvidia has confirmed that official support will also extend to the previous generation of RTX 40-series graphics cards. This strategic shift follows reports that modders had already successfully ported a leaked version of the software to run on older hardware, often pushing performance sliders beyond intended limits.

The timeline for broader adoption remains phased. According to Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj, the company’s immediate priority is stabilizing and optimizing performance for the new flagship hardware before addressing legacy systems.

“Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series,” reads part of Nvidia’s statement.

When asked about even older architectures like the RTX 30 and RTX 20 series, Maharaj clarified that these are not currently in scope. “Right now the focus is of course on 50-series,” Maharaj tells me. “Once we feel like the 50-series is in a good place, we’re going to look at the 40-series.”

Restricted User Controls

For consumers accustomed to fine-tuning graphical settings, DLSS 5 offers a notably limited interface compared to its predecessors or community-modded versions. Nvidia explicitly states that gamers will not have access to granular controls. Instead, the experience is simplified to a binary choice.

“For gamers, DLSS 5 is a simple on-or-off toggle,” the company confirms. “The more granular artistic controls are for developers, including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, automatic masking and custom per-pixel masking.”

This approach contrasts with earlier iterations of Nvidia’s super-resolution technology, which eventually allowed players to select specific quality presets or percentage-based scaling. However, developers retain the option to expose certain parameters within their own game menus if they choose to do so. The underlying technology relies heavily on semantic AI masking, which allows the system to automatically distinguish between complex scene elements such as faces, textiles, foliage, and glassware without manual input from artists.

Engine-level integration further enhances this capability. Game engines like Unreal Engine 5 can provide native plugins, allowing artists to isolate specific assets for tailored neural lighting adjustments. Nvidia emphasizes that these models process every single frame, eliminating any minimum framerate requirements for the technology to function effectively.

Developer Adoption Uncertainty

Despite the technical advancements, there are lingering questions about industry uptake following early criticism of the technology. When pressed for confirmation on whether previously announced titles such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, and Resident Evil Requiem would still support DLSS 5, Nvidia offered a cautious response that hinted at potential pullbacks.
