– Weight has been a key issue for foldables, with the original Galaxy Fold at 273g and the first Pixel Fold at 283g.
– The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will weigh 215g, have a 5,000 mAh battery, 45W charging, and a slight thickness reduction when open.
– The wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 will feature a new 50MP camera sensor with native 24MP output, instead of Samsung’s usual 12MP.
– Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series on July 22.
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, particularly the wider variant, is shaping up to be a standout addition to the lineup, as a new leak suggests it addresses one of the most persistent foldable flaws: weight.
Leaker Ice Universe took to Twitter/X this week with several details about Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, and the most compelling tidbit concerns the weight of the wide model. According to the leak, the passport-shaped foldable will tip the scales at just 201 grams. That is lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and even many traditional smartphones. For context, Google’s Pixel 10 Pro XL weighs in at 232g.
Weight has long been a critical pain point for foldables. The engineering demands of a second display, the hinge mechanism, and other internal components make it difficult to keep these devices light. The original Galaxy Fold weighed up to 273g, while Google’s first Pixel Fold hit 283g. Those devices were roughly 50% heavier than the heaviest conventional smartphones of their era, which made them less comfortable for everyday use. It is encouraging to see that Samsung has not only made substantial progress but is also continuing to push the weight down.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to maintain the same 215g weight as the Fold 7, but it will pack a larger 5,000 mAh battery. Ice Universe reports that the Ultra will also support 45W charging and feature a slight reduction in thickness when the device is open, though it remains largely unchanged from the Fold 7 in other respects.
The device previously referred to as “Wide” is also reportedly getting a new 50MP camera sensor that natively supports a 24MP output mode. Samsung typically captures images at 12MP, so this would mark a notable upgrade in resolution.
Rounding out the latest leaks, additional images of Fold 8 series dummy units have surfaced, showing the “Wide” model alongside the “Ultra” in its folded state.
Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series on July 22.
