On August 19, the company confirmed that Prime Air will soon begin servicing the metropolitan regions of Chicago, Cleveland, Atlanta, Syracuse, and Boise, with additional locations slated to come online before the year is out. Each designated Prime Air zone covers roughly 175 square miles, with customers receiving their packages anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes after placing an order.
The service is already operational out of Amazon fulfillment centers in ten cities across seven states. Current coverage largely centers on suburban communities surrounding Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Houston, and three Texas metros: San Antonio, Dallas, and Waco.
This expansion comes at a time when rival retailer Walmart is pushing forward with its own aerial logistics strategy. Partnering with drone operators Wing and Zipline, Walmart recently announced it has surpassed the 1 million delivery mark, a milestone achieved through operations at 66 stores in four states. The company has set its sights on broadening that footprint to more than 270 locations by 2027.
Zipline is also making moves on its own. The company, which first gained recognition for its long-range deliveries of blood and essential medical supplies across Africa, has forged a new alliance with Uber. The partnership aims to reach a staggering 1 million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029. With more than 2.7 million deliveries already completed worldwide, Zipline continues to steadily expand its U. S. presence, signaling that the race to dominate the skies is far from over.
