I’m the weekend editor at The Verge, with more than 18 years covering the tech industry, and I’ve always had a soft spot for synths. As a kid, I was completely hooked on Spirograph, mesmerized by those hypnotic, intricate geometric designs. I’m also a big fan of generative music. So when someone combines those two passions into a single browser tab, I’m immediately captivated. Musical Spirograph is built on a straightforward idea: points zip across the screen following mathematical formulas, creating hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. As these points travel, they cross a series of concentric rings, each one triggering a distinct note.
On its own, that visual and auditory loop is plenty entertaining. But the customization options take it to another level. You can choose from six different virtual rotors, run up to three arms at once, and tweak a wide range of parameters to alter the pattern. The musical side is equally flexible: six scale presets, or you can build your own custom notes, plus six synth voices to pick from. You can also adjust the quantization, set the BPM, or stretch the ring system out to cover two full octaves.
To be fair, the sound engine isn’t exactly pristine; it tends to clip and produce artifacts. And I’d love to see a MIDI output option so you could drive external instruments. Even so, it’s remarkably easy to lose yourself in this for a while, and that’s a rare kind of fun.
