Google Gemini launches dedicated student hub

As the new academic year approaches, Google is making a serious play for students with the launch of a dedicated hub inside its Gemini AI platform. The new space functions as a central command for academic work, allowing users to compile research into a digital study notebook, generate flashcards, and run practice quizzes without jumping between different apps. Beyond the organizational tools, Google is upgrading these notebooks to handle visual content, meaning you can now drop in graphs and images alongside your notes. Perhaps the most impressive trick, however, is the platform’s ability to scan your syllabus and automatically transfer test dates and assignment deadlines straight into Google Calendar.

The update also brings Deep Research capabilities directly into Gemini Live. This allows you to request complex, multi-source reports and then talk through the findings conversationally. If the system needs time to crunch the data, you aren’t stuck staring at a loading screen. You can lock your phone and walk away, and Gemini will ping you with a notification once the report is finished compiling. Looking ahead, Google is preparing a new feature for Lens within its main mobile app, slated to arrive in the coming weeks. This will let students snap a photo of a worksheet or study sheet and receive immediate explanations, breakdowns of tricky topics, and even targeted coaching on where they went wrong.

For those in the US who qualify, there is a significant financial incentive to dive in. Eligible students can claim a full year of Google AI Pro at no cost, a package that typically includes 5TB of cloud storage, a Google Health Premium membership, and elevated usage caps for Gemini across the broader Google ecosystem. International students, however, receive a slightly scaled-down offer: a complimentary subscription to Google AI Plus, which still provides 400GB of storage and access to Gemini, but with more modest usage limits than its Pro counterpart.
