Modders have successfully extracted and deployed an unofficial version of Nvidia’s upcoming DLSS 5 technology across a wide array of titles, including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, and Grand Theft Auto V. This experimental rollout follows the discovery of the AI upscaling code within an early-access build of NBA 2K27. According to reports from Notebook Check and VideoCardz, members of the RenoDX modding community on Discord managed to isolate the DLSS “Neural Rendering” file. They initially applied it to Control before expanding its use to other supported games.
Visual demonstrations reveal significant alterations to character models when these settings are adjusted. In one notable clip, players manipulate the features of Jesse Faden, the protagonist of Control. When the “Neural Uplift” feature is disabled, her face appears smooth and uniform. However, enabling the setting with specific presets results in a paler complexion, more pronounced laugh lines, and what resembles smudged makeup under the eyes. Similar effects are visible in GTA: San Andreas, where the tech applies a filter to CJ’s face, enhances city textures, and deepens shadows. Adjusting sliders can also shift the environmental lighting from warm to cool tones. Other videos showcase increased definition for characters in Palworld and varied shadow intensities across different projects.
Despite the visual enhancements, performance costs appear steep. Users testing the mod on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth reported that frame rates were effectively halved. One user noted that swapping between presets consumes a massive amount of video memory (vram). Another demonstration in GTA V showed frames dropping from 90 to 29 FPS as settings were tweaked. While the mod was originally designed for RTX 50-series graphics cards, some enthusiasts have reportedly achieved functionality on older hardware, including the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080.
Nvidia introduced DLSS 5 in March, promising real-time “photoreal lighting and materials” powered by artificial intelligence. Early demos featuring Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy faced immediate criticism. Many players complained that the technology gave characters a “yassified” or overly generic appearance. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential alteration of developers’ artistic visions. Addressing these issues, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that the tool “doesn’t change the artistic control.” The official release of DLSS 5 is scheduled for this fall.
