– CFO Amy Hood extended the estimated useful life of data centers and office buildings from 15 to 25 years, reclassifying future data center leases as operating leases to reduce reported capital expenditures.

Microsoft is gearing up to unveil a unified super app built around its AI assistant Copilot, a move that signals a major strategic shift for the tech giant.

“Copilot is evolving rapidly from chat to Cowork to autopilots,” CEO Satya Nadella told investors during Wednesday’s earnings call. “And this quarter, we are bringing these Copilot experiences together, including Code, in one super app spanning both consumer and commercial experiences. This is a major step forward, and I look forward to sharing more soon.”

The push toward AI super apps is reshaping the industry, with many experts viewing them as the natural endpoint for chatbots and consumer-facing digital tools. These all-in-one platforms combine messaging, task automation, and autonomous agents under a single interface.

OpenAI has spent nearly a year teasing a similar evolution for ChatGPT. A senior staffer at the company recently told the Financial Times that “Chat is dead,” hinting at what insiders describe as the chatbot’s most significant overhaul since its debut. That transformation, reportedly rolled out to employees earlier this month, mirrors Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, which has already merged with its chatbot counterpart. The super app trend extends beyond AI as well, with Elon Musk pushing to turn X into an “everything app” and companies like Uber and Airbnb pursuing comparable ambitions.

Fortune first reported on Microsoft’s super app plans back in May. According to that report, the platform will merge Copilot’s coding assistant, chat features, coworking tools, and autonomous agents. The core goal is to bridge the gap between personal and enterprise use, letting users switch seamlessly between the two. Internally, the project is being developed under the motto “Delivering one Copilot,” with a target launch set for the end of summer.

Wednesday’s earnings call offered more than just super app news, as Microsoft posted revenue growth that beat analyst expectations. A record performance in the company’s cloud division helped ease concerns that its heavy AI investments were not yielding returns. User engagement with Copilot is also climbing sharply.

“The number of conversations per user nearly doubled year over year,” Nadella said. “Average weekly engagement is on par with Outlook and Teams, and the time from deployment to high usage, meaning monthly active usage about 80% across a customer’s user base, has fallen from months to just days over the past year.”

CFO Amy Hood added that Microsoft has extended the estimated useful life of its data centers and office buildings from 15 to 25 years. That accounting change will alter the company’s future earnings calculations, as upcoming data center leases will now be classified as operating leases rather than finance leases. As a result, those costs will no longer fall under capital expenditures going forward.
