NASA’s Deep Space Network recovered in time for Artemis II

NASA’s Deep Space Network was pushed to its limits during the Artemis I mission nearly four years ago, struggling to balance routine communications with 40 robotic science missions and the unprecedented data demands of the Orion space capsule as it circled the Moon. By late 2022, the strain forced the agency to reduce or delay downlinks from high-profile science projects, including the James Webb Space Telescope and Mars rovers, because the data-heavy Artemis I mission took priority on the global communications array. And that was before the first crewed Artemis mission launched.
When Artemis II lifted off on April 1, NASA once again relied on the Deep Space Network (DSN) to keep Mission Control connected to the Orion capsule traveling more than a quarter million miles from Earth. This time, with four astronauts aboard, the agency’s appetite for data was even greater than during Artemis I. However, the mission’s shorter duration—just over nine days compared to Artemis I’s 25—helped ease the communications burden. Artemis I also deployed 10 small CubeSats into deep space, many requiring tracking and telecom services from the DSN, while Artemis II carried significantly fewer.
“We learned a lot on Artemis I, and we actually put some new processes in place ahead of Artemis II, mostly focused around coordination and our scheduling processes with all the missions, not just the Orion vehicle itself,” said Greg Heckler, deputy program manager for capability development in NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation Program. “I think that worked well.”
