Coinbase Launches AI Agent to Trade Crypto and Pay for Research

▼ Summary

– Coinbase launched an AI agent that can execute crypto trades and pay for premium research data via the x402 protocol.
– The agent integrates with a user’s Coinbase account or a sandbox, supports spot and derivatives trading, and will add equities and prediction markets.
– Using the x402 protocol, the agent pays for research APIs and compute without requiring logins or subscriptions, processing 75 million transactions and $24 million in volume recently.
– The agent works inside ChatGPT and Claude through Coinbase’s MCP server, allowing users to make trades via chat without switching apps.
– The launch follows Robinhood’s AI agents and raises regulatory concerns about autonomous trading, as AI-powered exploits have already drained $600 million from DeFi.

Coinbase has introduced an AI agent capable of executing crypto trades and paying for premium research data on behalf of users, marking a significant step in autonomous financial operations. The agent connects directly to a user’s primary Coinbase account or can function within a separate sandbox environment for testing. It handles spot crypto and derivatives markets, with plans to expand into equities and prediction markets shortly.

Users can instruct the agent to rebalance portfolios, follow a specific investment thesis, or offer one-time advice on a particular trade. It taps into Coinbase Advanced, the company’s professional trading platform, for both analysis and execution. Customizable limits for trade size, service access, and spending are expected soon, giving users more control over the agent’s autonomy.

The payment functionality is where this launch stands out. The agent relies on x402, an open payment protocol Coinbase debuted last year in collaboration with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near. Through x402, the agent can pay for premium research data APIs and on-demand computing power for trading insights, all without requiring a login or subscription. The protocol has already handled 75 million transactions and $24 million in volume over the past month.

The agent also operates within ChatGPT and Claude via Coinbase’s MCP server. This means a user conversing with an AI assistant can ask it to make a trade, and the agent will execute it through the Coinbase integration without leaving the chat interface.

“Unlike pure trading platforms, we’re the only one that combines exchange access with a native payments protocol,” said Lincoln Murr, Coinbase’s Head of AI Product. “We’re aiming to build a fundamentally different product for a future where most of the internet is accessed through agents.”

The announcement comes just days after Robinhood rolled out its own AI agents capable of trading for users, signaling an accelerating race to build agentic AI in finance. Visa invested in Replit last month to power agentic payments for developers and signed a deal with OpenAI this week to explore similar products. Meanwhile, the Financial Stability Board has called for stronger safeguards to mitigate AI risks in financial services.

Coinbase has been laying the groundwork for this for years. It launched AgentKit in 2024, enabling developers to integrate automated wallets into apps. It added an AI assistant to its main app last December. The latest agent represents the company’s most ambitious move yet, granting AI systems the ability to both trade and spend money autonomously, albeit within user-defined boundaries.

The implications are significant. AI-powered crypto exploits drained $600 million from DeFi in April alone. An agent that can trade and pay on a user’s behalf introduces a new attack surface. Coinbase says it will add custom spending controls, but regulators will likely question whether “user-defined limits” are sufficient when the agent is the one making the decisions. Bot traffic already exceeds human traffic online. Agentic finance is the next frontier, and the guardrails are still under construction.
