Nvidia has utilized Gamescom to announce a significant suite of updates for developers, spanning DLSS, RTX technologies, and the GeForce Now cloud gaming service. A primary focus of the announcement is the release of DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction, which is now accessible through the Nvidia app for all GeForce RTX graphics cards. This update leverages a second-generation transformer model designed to enhance visual fidelity in games utilizing ray or path tracing. According to Nvidia, this technology merges denoising and Super Resolution capabilities into one unified system, streamlining performance while improving image quality.
The initial rollout supports thirty major titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Game studios can integrate this feature into their own projects through official software updates. This launch arrives amidst ongoing industry debate regarding AI integration in gaming. Earlier this week, Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5, which faced criticism from some observers who argued it imposed an artificial “AI sheen” on character models, potentially undermining artistic intent. Addressing these concerns at the conference, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang defended the technology’s approach.
Huang stated that critics were “completely wrong,” asserting that DLSS 5 enhances rather than replaces developer control. He explained that the technology “fuses controllability of the geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI” while ensuring that “direct control” remains firmly with the creators. Major publishers such as Bethesda, Capcom, NetEase, NCSoft, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros Games have already confirmed support for DLSS 5.
In addition to software updates, Nvidia highlighted progress on RTX Spark, a Windows platform set to debut this fall. This initiative combines DLSS and Reflex with on-device AI agents to assist development workflows. Confirmed partners include Electronic Arts, Embark Studios, and Ubisoft, who are integrating titles like EA Sports F1 25, Apex Legends, and Arc Raiders. They join previous signatories Krafton, NetEase, Riot Games, and Xbox. Nvidia also revealed collaboration with EA to implement native support for its Javelin anti-cheat system within the RTX Spark ecosystem.
A notable technical breakthrough presented was RTX Mega Geometry, showcased in the upcoming title Gears of War: E-Day. Scheduled for release on October 6, this title will utilize Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite system to render geometry at full detail during ray tracing operations for the first time. Developed over six years of research and development, this technique is slated for inclusion in Microsoft’s DirectX Raytracing 2.0 standard, thereby extending ray-traced Nanite support to any game built on UE5.
Other titles receiving advanced graphical features include Remedy’s Control Resonant, which will launch with the complete DLSS 4.5 suite, including Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and path-traced effects. IO Interactive’s 007 First Light is also set to add path tracing and Ray Reconstruction on September 15. Further announcements included support for eight additional games, such as Aion 2, Black State, and Ananta.
Updates to RTX Remix, Nvidia’s modding toolkit for path tracing, now include support for DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation. The toolkit also saw new content releases, including a remaster of the first fifteen levels of Painkiller and a mod for Morrowind covering the Seyda Neen and Balmora regions. On the cloud gaming front, GeForce Now introduced GOG single sign-on and official Firefox browser support, both available immediately. Additional compatibility improvements for Steam Machines, Steam Controllers, and Fire TV devices are expected later this year, with day-one streaming support for Control Resonant and Gears of War: E-Day. Hardware partners also showcased new peripherals, notably AGON by AOC’s inaugural 5K G-SYNC Pulsar monitor.
