Facebook and Instagram are rolling out a new tool to identify and remove users under the age of 13: AI-powered bone structure analysis. In a blog post on Tuesday, Meta , the parent company of both platforms , explained that its artificial intelligence system will scan photos and videos for “general themes and visual cues,” including height and bone structure.
Meta is careful to note that this technology is not facial recognition. “We want to be clear: this is not facial recognition,” the company stated, adding that the system “does not identify the specific person in the image.” Instead, it’s designed to detect age-related physical markers, part of a broader push to keep younger children off the platforms. The AI will also examine posts, comments, bios, and captions for “contextual clues” that might indicate a user is underage.
