Amazon has rolled out a new AI-powered shopping feature designed to make product research faster and more interactive. The tool, launched Tuesday, enables customers to ask questions about items and receive real-time, conversational audio responses generated by what the company calls “AI-powered shopping experts.”
The “Join the chat” feature is built to save shoppers time by delivering key product details without the need to sift through long descriptions or reviews. The AI synthesizes insights from product specifications, customer feedback, and other relevant data to provide tailored answers. For instance, a shopper could ask whether a specific coffee maker is beginner-friendly or if a sweater tends to feel itchy based on user reviews.
Instead of offering static, one-size-fits-all replies, Amazon says the AI builds on previous questions to deliver more relevant and useful information while avoiding repetition. The goal is to mimic the experience of consulting a knowledgeable in-store associate.
“Customers can ask questions and actually steer where the conversation goes. Every question they ask influences what comes next, making the experience a conversation customers can join and customize,” the company explained in a blog post.
“Join the chat” is part of a broader initiative called “Hear the highlights,” which provides short audio summaries on millions of product pages within the Amazon Shopping app. That feature began testing in May of last year and is currently available in the U. S., though only select products include audio summaries.
To access the feature, customers open a product page in the app and tap the “Hear the highlights” button located below the product image. They can then listen to a brief overview or tap the “Join the chat” icon to ask specific questions using text or voice. The audio continues playing even as users navigate away from the page.
This latest capability expands Amazon’s growing suite of AI-driven shopping tools. These include Rufus, a generative AI assistant that helps customers research products and compare options; Interests, which continuously monitors and surfaces new items matching a shopper’s preferences; and “Help me decide,” which suggests products based on a person’s search history, browsing behavior, and past purchases.
