Square Enix has officially announced that Final Fantasy XIV will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 this August. While the news is exciting for fans of the long-running MMORPG, it comes with a frustrating catch: players will need to purchase a separate subscription to play on the Switch 2, even if they already maintain an active subscription for another platform. That means anyone hoping to play FFXIV on both their Switch 2 and, say, a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC will have to pay for two distinct subscriptions simultaneously.
On the brighter side, the Switch 2 version will support full cross-progression, allowing players to carry their characters, progress, and items between platforms. Additionally, Square Enix and Nintendo have confirmed that a Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be required to play FFXIV on the Switch 2, removing one potential extra cost.
The announcement came during the opening keynote of today’s Final Fantasy XIV: Fan Fest event. Alongside the Switch 2 news, Square Enix revealed Evercold, the game’s next major expansion, which is slated for release in January 2027.
