Meta is launching a new feature called “Vibes,” a dedicated feed for AI-generated short videos within its Meta AI app and on the meta.ai website. This initiative essentially creates a platform similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but populated entirely by content produced by artificial intelligence. The announcement was made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg via an Instagram post showcasing several example videos. These clips depicted a group of indistinct creatures hopping between blocks, a cat kneading dough, and an ancient Egyptian woman taking a selfie.
According to the company, the Vibes feed will display AI-generated videos from both creators and general users. Meta’s algorithm will personalize the content shown to each individual over time. Users have the ability to generate a video from scratch or remix an existing one they see in their feed. The creation tools allow for adding new visuals, incorporating music, and adjusting styles before publishing. Finished videos can be posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or shared to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
To power this early version of Vibes, Meta has partnered with external AI image generators Midjourney and Black Forest Labs. The company’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, confirmed these partnerships while noting that Meta continues to develop its own proprietary AI models internally.
The initial reaction from users to Zuckerberg’s announcement was overwhelmingly negative. Top comments on the post included statements like “gang nobody wants this” and “Bro’s posting ai slop on his own app,” reflecting a significant degree of skepticism about the demand for such a feature. This launch is particularly curious given the current climate on social media, where many platforms are struggling with an influx of low-quality, AI-generated content. YouTube, for instance, has recently announced measures to crack down on this very issue. The move also appears to contradict Meta’s own advice to creators earlier this year, which emphasized the importance of “authentic storytelling” over “unoriginal” content that offers little value.
This push into AI-generated video arrives as Meta has been making substantial investments to revitalize its artificial intelligence initiatives. There have been concerns that the company was lagging behind competitors like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. In June, Meta restructured its AI departments into a new division named “Meta Superintelligence Labs” following several key staff departures. Reports indicate the division was subsequently organized into four focused groups dealing with foundation models, research, product integration, and infrastructure.
