AI Referrals Surge 197% at Shopify, But Organic Search Dominates

▼ Summary

– AI-referred sessions to Shopify merchant storefronts grew 197% year over year in Q2, while organic search traffic increased 12%.
– AI-referred shoppers converted at roughly twice the rate of organic visitors in research-intensive categories, but organic search remained the largest source of referral traffic.
– In taste-driven categories, organic search was the larger discovery channel, though AI brought in about 1.3 times more first-time customers.
– AI-referred shoppers converted at twice the rate when AI systems used structured Shopify Catalog data instead of scraped or third-party product feeds.
– Shopify CTO Mikhail Parakhin said the data challenges the idea that AI search is replacing organic search, noting the overall traffic pie grew larger.

AI-referred traffic to Shopify storefronts jumped 197 percent year over year in Q2, while organic search still grew 12 percent, according to fresh commerce data the platform released this week. The numbers reveal that both channels are expanding simultaneously, though they serve distinctly different shopping behaviors.

AI-referred shoppers converted at roughly double the rate of organic visitors in research-intensive product categories, Shopify found. Yet organic search remained the dominant traffic source for merchants, outpacing all tracked AI platforms combined. Sessions and orders from AI referrals both approximately tripled across nearly every product category the company monitors, but the sheer scale of organic volume kept it firmly in first place.

The pattern suggests shoppers haven’t abandoned traditional search even as AI adoption accelerates. Shopify’s analysis points to a complementary relationship rather than a zero-sum contest.

AI delivered its strongest performance in specification-heavy purchases. Categories where shoppers compare technical details, compatibility, reviews, and other criteria before committing saw the biggest conversion gains. In those segments, AI-referred visitors converted at about twice the rate of organic users. Meanwhile, taste-driven categories still favored organic search as the primary discovery channel, though AI brought in roughly 1.3 times more new customers.

Structured product data proved critical to conversion success. When AI systems relied on Shopify’s structured Catalog data rather than scraped or third-party feeds, AI-referred shoppers converted at twice the rate. This aligns with Google’s guidance that AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from the same core ranking systems as standard Search, meaning well-structured product information boosts visibility across both AI and traditional results.

Shopify CTO Mikhail Parakhin weighed in on X, pushing back against the narrative that AI is displacing organic discovery. “Everyone (myself included) assumes AI is swallowing Search and killing organic discovery. Surprisingly, Shopify’s numbers say otherwise: AI-referred sessions are up 3x YoY, but organic still grew 12% on a much bigger base. The pie itself got bigger.”

The takeaway for marketers is straightforward: AI search is accelerating, but organic remains the traffic backbone. The optimization work that improves structured product data for AI platforms also strengthens traditional search presence, so treating these channels as separate efforts would be a mistake.

Shopify based its findings on Q2 commerce data from merchant storefronts, comparing AI-referred and organic traffic through sessions, orders, and conversion rates across product categories. The company did not specify how many merchants or transactions were included in the analysis.
