S. retailers surged 393% year-over-year in Q1, with a peak of 1,151% YoY in December. Engagement climbed 12%, time spent per visit rose 48%, pages per visit increased 13%, and revenue per visit jumped 37%. These figures compare AI-referred traffic against non-AI traffic in March 2026, drawn from Adobe’s own analytics data across retailers on its platform.

But the real shift is the conversion sign flip. The channel went from the worst performer in U. S. retail to the best performer. In just twelve months.

For anyone running or optimizing a website, this changes which metric truly matters.

One caveat upfront: Adobe released this report alongside Adobe LLM Optimizer, a product designed to make websites more visible to AI assistants. Technical audit for AI crawlers and JavaScript readability

Two things you can verify this weekend without tools, a team, or a budget.

First, disable JavaScript. Open a fresh browser profile, turn JavaScript off, and reload a product page. Is the price in the HTML? The product name? Stock status? The buy button? Most AI crawlers that index pages for citation don’t execute JavaScript, or they execute it inconsistently. If critical facts require JavaScript to render, the AI can’t cite what it can’t see, and your page won’t surface as a reference in the assistant’s answer.

Second, run the answer-first test. Does your product page lead with what the thing is, what it costs, and whether it’s available? Or does it lead with brand navigation, hero imagery, lifestyle copy, and a carousel? AI models retrieving and summarizing your page pick up the first dense, structured facts they find. Humans tolerate brand theater. AI indexers don’t scroll past it to find the price.

If both checks pass, flat AI numbers point to a distribution problem. You’re not being referred. Address that separately. If either fails, it’s an architecture problem. The 393% growth is passing you by.

Legibility versus optimization for AI referral traffic

AI-referred traffic doesn’t reward optimization. It rewards legibility. Those are not the same thing.
