PlayStation Portal Hits Record Low Price for Black Friday

After finally deciding to purchase a PlayStation Portal earlier this year, I’ve found it has seamlessly integrated into my everyday gaming habits. This handheld device has allowed me to steadily work through my collection of unfinished games, making titles like Blue Prince and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 far more accessible than they would have been otherwise. Initially, I hesitated to fully endorse the PS Portal because it depended heavily on streaming from a PS5 console, ideally located nearby. However, two recent developments have completely shifted my perspective: a significant firmware update enabling cloud streaming directly from the PlayStation library, and the arrival of unprecedented Black Friday discounts.

In my view, the PlayStation Portal has now become the ideal gadget I always hoped for, letting me jump straight into my PS Plus collection without any hassle. The device has genuinely never performed better, and with these outstanding Black Friday offers, it has also never been more affordable.

Currently, Amazon US is selling the PS Portal for just $179, down from its original $199.99 price, marking the lowest cost ever recorded for this product. Shoppers in the UK can find a similar bargain, as EE has reduced the price to £175, slashing it from £199 and setting a new record low.

Thanks to the cloud streaming enhancement, owning a PS5 is no longer a requirement to use the PlayStation Portal. As long as you maintain an active PS Plus Premium subscription, you gain immediate access to a broad selection of streamable games.

Although the initial retail price of $199.99 / £199.99 may have seemed steep at launch, I now consider the Portal an essential purchase. It has quickly become my favorite PS5 accessory, and over time, I find myself using it even more than the main console.

My go-to gaming companion

I initially bought the PlayStation Portal for casual gaming sessions, whether relaxing in bed, lounging on the sofa, or spending time with my cat on the kitchen floor (his preferred spot, I might add). Gradually, I started choosing the handheld over playing on the television, especially since it allows my partner to join me on the couch with their own game.

When it comes to handheld comfort, the PS Portal stands alone. The Nintendo Switch tends to make my arms feel numb, and I’m pretty sure my PS Vita left me with lasting wrist strain. Because the Portal is essentially a display nestled between two halves of a genuine PS5 controller, its design is unmatched. I can play for extended periods without my arms growing tired or stiff.

Rediscovering forgotten favorites

One of the biggest advantages of having a PlayStation Portal is that I’m gaming more frequently, even if only in short sessions. This year, I’ve experienced several games I otherwise wouldn’t have found time for, including nearly 40 hours of Blue Prince played exclusively on the Portal. Sometimes, I’ll even launch Arc Raiders for a quick 20-minute resource run when I have a spare moment.

As someone who writes about games professionally, having a fast and convenient way to sample various titles has been incredibly helpful. I’ve been impressed by how smoothly even major releases like Death Stranding 2 operate on the PS Portal.

Embracing cloud convenience

Sony rolled out an update for the PlayStation Portal earlier this month, introducing cloud streaming access for every PS Plus Premium member. Now, you don’t need to connect to your PS5 at all, the cloud streaming option has its own dedicated section in the menu.

While I haven’t conducted exhaustive tests, I recently explored my PS Plus library and effortlessly hopped between different games. I played the introductory stage of TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, then switched over to Fortnite to tackle a few missions, all without ever turning on my PS5.

It feels like I suddenly have an enormous library of games available within seconds, accessible directly from the Portal’s cloud streaming interface. In the past, I might have passed on revisiting classics like Jak & Daxter simply because I didn’t want to wait for a download. Now, I can pick any title and start playing immediately. Performance has been remarkably smooth, nearly matching the quality of the primary streaming method, and the overall experience feels incredibly fluid.

Given the recent firmware improvements, the PlayStation Portal is now an easy recommendation for any PS5 owner. In fact, it offers a surprisingly economical way to enjoy PS5 games without purchasing the console, something that wasn’t possible just a few months back.

Combined with the current Black Friday pricing, these new capabilities make the PS Portal a uniquely attractive piece of hardware. You could certainly invest more in a Steam Deck or spend extra on a ROG Ally X, but why would you when the PS Portal delivers so much value and functionality at such a low cost?
