While a dedicated “AirPods app” remains unlikely, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is developing software improvements to change how users adjust settings for their AirPods and AirPods Pro. iOS 27 is expected to bring a significant overhaul to the AirPods menu within the Settings app, making it “more functional, better organized and more streamlined,” according to Bloomberg.
The AirPods settings screen currently appears at the top of the Settings app when a pair of AirPods is connected. Over time, however, the layout has become cluttered and overwhelming. Apple has added numerous new features to the AirPods experience in recent years, including head gestures, hearing aid functionality, and sleep detection. Each addition was essentially bolted onto the same settings interface that dates back to the original AirPods.
It appears Apple is finally giving this screen a fundamental revamp. The update should improve the information hierarchy, making it more organized and highlighting key functionality. While the Apple Watch and Vision Pro each have a dedicated companion app on the iPhone’s home screen, AirPods will remain confined to Settings.
Bloomberg indicates these changes to the AirPods settings UI will be part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Apple is expected to officially unveil the new operating systems at its WWDC conference in just a couple of weeks. The main keynote will begin at 10 AM PT on June 8. The primary focus of these new operating systems will be a major redesign of Siri, oriented toward a more modern, chatbot-like experience and backed by new AI models using Google Gemini technology.
