Apple plans to let iOS 27 users pick their AI model

▼ Summary

– iOS 27 will let users choose from third-party AI models to power on-device functions like Siri and Writing Tools.
– The feature, called “Extensions,” will allow access to generative AI from installed apps through Apple Intelligence.
– Models from Google and Anthropic are being tested for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27; ChatGPT’s future role is unclear.
– Incoming CEO John Ternus is responsible for Apple’s AI strategy as the company is seen as behind in AI services.
– Apple’s AI plan focuses on turning existing hardware into an AI-centric experience rather than building new infrastructure.

When iOS 27 arrives later this year, iPhone users may find themselves with far more control over the artificial intelligence powering their devices. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to let users choose from a variety of third-party large language models to handle on-device AI tasks.

Internally referred to as Extensions,” this feature will reportedly allow users to “access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more.” That description, as seen in test versions of the software, signals a significant shift in how Apple approaches AI integration. The same capability is expected to roll out on iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 as well.

The report indicates that models from Google and Anthropic are currently being tested for compatibility. Where ChatGPT fits into this picture remains less certain. Since it is already the default model available to users, one likely outcome is that ChatGPT will remain one of several options.

TechCrunch has reached out to Apple for additional comment.

This strategic move comes at a transitional moment for the company. With longtime CEO Tim Cook preparing to step down, incoming top executive John Ternus will be responsible for shaping Apple’s future, including its AI direction. Apple has often been viewed as lagging behind competitors in the AI race, having launched fewer new AI services than some of its peers.

Still, the company continues to generate substantial AI-related revenue. Rather than pouring resources into building out its own AI infrastructure and services from scratch, Apple’s approach focuses on transforming its existing hardware into a more AI-centric user experience. This new model selection feature fits squarely into that philosophy, giving users flexibility without requiring Apple to build every AI tool from the ground up.
