Tesla reaches Musk’s threshold for unsupervised driving

▼ Summary

– Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) fleet has driven over 10 billion miles, crossing a threshold Elon Musk set for “safe unsupervised” driving.
– Despite reaching this milestone, FSD remains a Level 2 system requiring a fully attentive human driver to monitor the road and take over at any moment.
– The 10 billion mile figure comes from Tesla’s updated safety page.
– Musk set the 10 billion mile goal earlier in 2025 as a condition for unsupervised operation.
– The achievement did not result in Tesla vehicles being upgraded to unsupervised FSD.

Tesla has officially crossed the threshold Elon Musk set for “safe unsupervised” driving, but don’t expect your car to start driving itself without supervision just yet. The company’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system has now accumulated over 10 billion miles of driving, according to Tesla’s updated safety page. That milestone matches the target Musk laid out earlier this year as the prerequisite for allowing unsupervised operation.

Despite hitting that number, FSD remains a Level 2 driver-assistance system. It still demands a fully attentive human driver behind the wheel, ready to monitor the road and take control at a moment’s notice. Tesla owners did not wake up to find their vehicles magically upgraded to FSD (Unsupervised). The technology has not been authorized for hands-off, eyes-off operation in any real-world driving scenario.

In January, Musk stated that reaching 10 billion miles of FSD driving would be a key benchmark for deploying unsupervised self-driving capabilities. The company has now achieved that figure, yet the regulatory and technical hurdles remain significant. Tesla has not received approval from any U. S. state or federal agency to operate a true driverless system, and its current FSD software still requires constant human oversight.

The gap between Musk’s ambitious timelines and actual deployment is nothing new. The CEO has repeatedly predicted that full autonomy was just around the corner, only to push back deadlines. Now, with the mileage target met, the question is whether Tesla can finally deliver on its promise of robotaxis and unsupervised driving , or if this is just another milestone that leads to more waiting.
