Instagram stops recommending aggregator accounts to users

▼ Summary
– Instagram announced new content ranking guidelines that boost original content creators and reduce recommendations for accounts that primarily repost others’ content without meaningful additions.
– The updated guidelines now apply to photos and carousel posts, following similar rules for Reels announced in 2024.
– Original content is defined as work wholly created by the user or third-party content materially edited, such as adding unique text or creative graphics.
– Accounts that frequently reshare content can avoid being marked ineligible by sharing to stories, using the repost button, or enabling collab posts.
– Aggregator accounts marked ineligible can regain recommendations by posting original content for most of their posts over 30 days or by removing unoriginal content and appealing.
Instagram is tightening its algorithmic grip on reposters. The platform has updated its content ranking rules to favor creators who produce original work, while accounts that simply aggregate or reshare others’ material without meaningful changes will lose recommendation visibility.
In a recent Creators blog post, Instagram clarified that aggregator accounts , those that primarily repost content without adding their own value , will no longer be suggested to non-followers. This policy already applied to Reels in 2024, and now it extends to photo and carousel posts as well.
What qualifies as “original content”? According to Instagram, it means “work that you wholly created or reflects your unique perspective.” That includes original photos and designs, but also third-party content that has been materially edited by the user. Examples include adding unique text that provides deeper context, overlaying creative graphics that offer new information, or using the platform’s remix feature to transform the original post.
For accounts that frequently reshare content, Instagram recommends using the share to story function, the repost button, or enabling collab posts to avoid being flagged as ineligible.
If an aggregator account is already marked ineligible for recommendations, all is not lost. The platform says that pivoting to original posts can reverse the decision. Specifically, “most” of an account’s posts, carousels, and reels must feature original content over a 30-day period. Users can also remove unoriginal posts and appeal the decision through Instagram’s system.
This move underscores Instagram’s ongoing push to reward authentic, creative contributions over recycled content. For creators who consistently produce original work, the algorithm is now on their side.
