Evercade is shifting its strategy with the announcement of a new flagship handheld, the Nexus. This device marks a significant departure from the company’s recent trend of compact systems, instead prioritizing a premium, modern gaming experience centered on a large 5.89-inch screen. This display is substantially bigger than the 4.3-inch panel on the previous EXP-R model. The upgrade extends beyond size, offering a higher 840×512 pixel resolution and adopting a contemporary 16:9 aspect ratio over the older 4:3 format. Preorders for the Nexus will open on April 1st at a price of $199.99, with shipments anticipated for October 2026.

The Nexus maintains the core philosophy of Evercade’s ecosystem. Like the Super Pocket and other models, it is a dedicated retro gaming platform. It does not feature an app store, cannot play user-provided ROM files, and is not designed for PC game streaming or emulation. The focus remains squarely on playing official game cartridges from Evercade’s expanding library.

A major physical upgrade comes with the inclusion of dual analog thumbsticks, a first for an Evercade handheld. This addition should improve control for a wider variety of game genres. The system also features a more traditional horizontal layout, contrasting with the vertical design of the Super Pocket, and includes a microSD card slot for future functionality. While the internal storage capacity has not been specified, the device will support save states for game cartridges.

The launch will be supported by two new cartridge collections. A 10-game Taito Collection 2 is set for release alongside the hardware in October. Following that, an 11-game Jaleco Collection is scheduled for November, continuing Evercade’s partnerships with classic game publishers to curate official retro compilations.
