Grand Theft Auto VI is set to become the biggest video game launch in history, and arguably the largest single entertainment release ever. Whether it arrives on November 19, 2026, as currently planned, or faces a delay, that status is virtually guaranteed. Yet this monumental launch will initially skip PC, arriving only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The absence of a PC version at launch has sparked intense debate. Some speculate that Rockstar and Take-Two want players to double-dip, buying the game on console first and again on PC later. Others point to the immense development burden, noting that Rockstar developers already endure severe crunch just to ship the console versions. Adding a PC version at launch would amplify that strain, though Rockstar could certainly afford it.

However, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently offered the official explanation. Speaking to Bloomberg at the ESA’s Interactive Innovation Conference in Las Vegas, Zelnick stated that Rockstar prioritizes consoles because that’s where “the core consumer” resides.

“Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core,” Zelnick said. “Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”

Zelnick clarified that this approach is specific to Rockstar. Other Take-Two studios, such as 2K, see 40-50% of sales from PC players on titles like the annual NBA 2K series. He also emphasized that the console-first strategy is unrelated to any exclusivity deals with platform holders like Sony. “Historically, Rockstar’s gone to console first.”

So the official reason is straightforward: Rockstar views console players as its primary audience, and PC players will always come second. Some PC gamers may dispute this, but for now, that’s the company’s stance.

This explanation is somewhat surprising given the staggering costs involved. GTA 6 has reportedly required thousands of developers working for years, with expenses far exceeding imagination. Zelnick admitted that the combination of cost, cultural weight, and sky-high expectations is “terrifying.” A simultaneous PC launch would surely ease those fears by expanding the day-one buyer base.

Yet the decision stands: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S first, PC later. “I think here our goal is to deliver to consumers something that’s never been experienced before,” Zelnick said. “Being on the sidelines but pretty close to the front of the sidelines is very, very exciting. And terrifying. Because the expectations are so high.”

Still, Zelnick remains unfazed. Commenting on Take-Two’s focus on blockbuster titles like GTA, he added, “That’s a high-stakes game for big boys only, and I’m cool with it.”
