A new report suggests that hopes for a physical disc release of Grand Theft Auto 6, either at launch or later, may be unfounded. The controversy reignited this week after an insider claimed that a proper physical edition would arrive in December, but a source with direct knowledge of the plans has now pushed back.
Earlier this week, the same insider who in February predicted that GTA 6 would skip a physical launch said a disc-based version would follow in December. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which confirmed the authenticity of a Rockstar support email, that interpretation is wrong. The outlet insists that “the language is being misinterpreted by a hopeful internet,” and that there are no plans for a physical release , not at launch, and not months later.
The confusion stemmed from a Rockstar Support response to a ticket asking about a disc version. The email stated, “You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months.” But THR argues this is being taken out of context, and that the company’s stance remains unchanged. We have reached out to Take-Two for official comment.
This week has been a whirlwind for GTA 6 news. Pre-orders went live, and we finally learned the game’s price. But outrage erupted over rumors that the “physical edition” would contain only a download code, not a disc. Many see this as a broader strategy to crush the second-hand market, sparking a heated debate about game ownership. Rockstar also released new screenshots detailing exclusive Ultimate Edition shops, missions, cars, and outfits.
Additionally, reports indicate that GTA 6 will feature an in-game social network, where players can watch videos and follow influencers to discover “secret” side missions.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
