Grand Theft Auto VI reshapes the gaming release schedule

▼ Summary

– Many major publishers have scheduled their biggest games for September and October to avoid competing with the November launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, creating a crowded release window.
– Sony’s State of Play showcased several major third-party titles launching in late September and early October, including *Dune: Awakening*, *Silent Hill: Townfall*, and *Ace Combat 8*.
– At Summer Game Fest, several high-profile games, such as *Stranger Than Heaven* and *Fable*, were delayed to 2027, with some publishers explicitly citing the need to avoid GTA VI.
– GTA VI is considered a guaranteed hit, as its predecessor sold nearly 230 million copies and continues generating revenue through its online mode.
– Nintendo has not yet announced its holiday plans, leaving the calendar empty for a potential major Switch 2 launch, possibly in November.

The gaming industry is running scared of one title: Grand Theft Auto VI. Though absent from the recent Summer Game Fest keynotes, its looming November release has reshaped the entire release calendar. The month of its launch stands virtually empty, while the rest of fall has become a chaotic jumble of major titles scrambling for space.

Sony’s State of Play showcase on Tuesday kicked off this trend. Alongside the previously announced Wolverine (September 15th), a wave of third-party blockbusters now crowds the pre-November window: Dune: Awakening (September 22nd), Control Resonant (September 24th), Silent Hill: Townfall (September 24th), Onimusha: Way of the Sword (September 25th), and Ace Combat 8 (October 2nd). This joins already slated heavyweights like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in October.

At SGF Live this evening, the avoidance strategy went even further. Several high-profile games have pushed their launches into 2027. This list includes Sega’s crime epic Stranger Than Heaven and its Virtua Fighter spinoff Crossroads; Bandai Namco’s Gundam Rogue Orbit; Capcom’s “massive expansion” for Monster Hunter Wilds; the debut racer Clutch from Maverick Games; and The Wolf Among Us 2 from Telltale. Even the big reveal of the night, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, won’t arrive until spring 2027.

Xbox, whose keynote isn’t until Sunday, has already cleared the path. When announcing yet another delay for Fable , now targeting 2027 , Microsoft explicitly cited a “year packed with incredible games,” naming GTA VI directly alongside other titles.

Not every date change is solely due to Rockstar’s behemoth, but the pattern is unmistakable. This mirrors last year’s indie scramble when Silksong got a surprise September date. The difference now is scale: It’s not small studios shifting plans, but industry giants like Sony, Microsoft, and Capcom.

The logic is sound. GTA VI is the closest thing to a guaranteed blockbuster. Its predecessor sold nearly 230 million copies across three console generations and continues generating revenue through its online mode. While the sequel may not match those numbers, it will still sell massively. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently predicted “new record levels of operating performance” driven by the November 19th launch. Even a hint of a new trailer sets the internet ablaze.

But the herd mentality creates its own problem. With everyone dodging November, September is now a logjam of major releases, many launching on the exact same day. Is that truly better than launching near GTA?

When asked about the crowded window at a recent preview event, Control Resonant creative director Mikael Kasurinen expressed confidence. “We’re confident in our game,” he said. “We feel like we’re in a good place, we have a very distinctive, unique experience, and we believe in that.”

One notable holdout is Nintendo. The company hasn’t detailed its holiday plans, focusing instead on near-term releases like Star Fox (June 25th), Rhythm Heaven Groove (July 2nd), and Splatoon Raiders (July 23rd). Beyond that, the calendar is empty, hinting at a major announcement , likely the games that will power the Switch 2 through the holiday season. If any company would defy the industry trend and launch a major title in November, it would be Nintendo.
