A home-energy startup that launched just three years ago has rocketed to a $13 billion valuation. Base Power has closed a $1 billion Series D round and unveiled its proprietary home battery system, Base Core. The core premise is straightforward: the U.S. power grid cannot expand quickly enough to meet surging electricity demand, so the company is betting that thousands of distributed home batteries can fill the gap.

The fresh capital brings Base Power’s total funding past $2.5 billion, according to the Austin-based firm. Ribbit, Addition, Valor Equity Partners, and JPMorganChase’s strategic investment arm co-led the round, with participation from existing investors including a16z, Thrive Capital, Lightspeed, and CapitalG.

Base Core, the product this funding is designed to scale, is now in production at the company’s Austin factory. Rated at either 39.2 or 78.4 kWh, it ranks among the largest residential batteries currently available. CEO Zach Dell, son of Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell, says the system installs in less than an hour and is engineered to withstand extreme weather events. It is currently on sale in select markets across Texas and Illinois.

The grid can’t keep pace

The investment thesis hinges on a dynamic that has become central to energy discussions: AI data centers and broader electrification are driving power demand upward at a rate utilities cannot match with new supply. Constructing additional generation capacity is a slow, expensive process. Base Power’s alternative is distributed by design. Install a large battery in every home, then aggregate those units into a flexible pool of capacity that the grid can draw upon during peak periods.

That approach turns each residence into a node within a virtual power plant, marketed to homeowners as both cheaper electricity and reliable backup. It is, in effect, the inverse of the data-center strain. Base reports its fleet has surpassed 500 MWh, operations have expanded from Texas into Illinois, and utility partnerships with El Paso Electric, Austin Energy, and CoServ now total more than 200 MW.

A valuation that demands growth

The $13 billion price tag is the most striking element. For a startup founded in 2023 with a roughly 500 MWh fleet, that figure is aggressive. Home batteries are a capital-intensive, installation-by-installation hardware business that has tripped up more established players. The virtual power plant model only generates meaningful returns at national scale, and Base Core is currently available in portions of just two states.

What Base Power possesses is capital and conviction. The raise arrives as major tech companies pour billions into data centers and speculative energy ventures like fusion to power them. Base’s argument is that the fastest available new capacity is already sitting in people’s garages. The same AI boom that is overloading the grid has transformed grid fixes into a venture-scale opportunity.

For now, the operational footprint is smaller than the valuation suggests. Core is live in limited regions of two states, produced at a factory with a monthly output in the thousands. The $13 billion figure represents a wager that the garage becomes the power plant, and that Base Power reaches that future first.
