Ubisoft is pressing forward with its push into generative AI, even as early looks at its implementation reportedly fall flat. The publisher’s latest financial report confirms it is “accelerating investments” into generative AI, both for internal development tools and for features players can interact with directly in games.

While Ubisoft’s experimental AI project Teammates was already known, no other specific titles were named in the report. But according to Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, generative AI is being tested inside Far Cry 7 , and his assessment is blunt. “They’ve been testing this in Far Cry 7 for R&D, and it looks like sNonet,” Henderson said, not mincing words about what he has seen.

In follow-up replies, Henderson clarified that Ubisoft’s AI experiments go beyond Teammates. “They have just been testing prompts and whatever in Far Cry 7 for research and development,” he explained. This suggests the company is using the high-profile franchise as a sandbox for its AI tools, rather than committing to shipping them in the final product.

Many players will hope these are strictly internal tests that never make it into the retail version. But given reports that development on Far Cry 7 has been chaotic, there is concern that generative AI could be forced in to accelerate production or simply to gauge what audiences will tolerate.

The broader gaming community has largely rejected generative AI in games, though there have been exceptions. Arc Raiders, for example, used AI voice acting and faced less backlash, and the developers later walked back the decision. Ubisoft, however, has done little to win over fans lately. Several projects have been cancelled, including a nearly finished Prince of Persia remake. With so much riding on Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, which launches July 9, the company can ill afford another misstep.
