Perplexity’s AI PC is now available on Mac

▼ Summary

– Perplexity’s Personal Computer feature is now available to all Mac users via its new desktop app, after previously being limited to Max subscribers on a waitlist.
– The feature allows AI agents to access local files, applications, connectors, and the web to handle personal, multi-step workflows on the user’s device.
– It is designed as a safer alternative to local AI agents like OpenClaw, which posed security risks due to elevated permissions.
– The software can work with native Mac apps, operate on the web, use over 400 connectors, and be paired with Perplexity’s Comet browser for web-based tools.
– Personal Computer can run autonomous agents on an always-on device like a Mac Mini, accessible remotely from an iPhone for task initiation or approval.

Perplexity has expanded access to its Personal Computer feature, making it available to all Mac users through the company’s desktop application as of Thursday. This marks a significant step in bringing local AI agent capabilities to individual devices.

The Personal Computer tool functions as an extension of Perplexity’s broader digital worker system, which the company calls Perplexity Computer. While that name can cause some confusion, the distinction is clear: Personal Computer is designed to run on your own hardware rather than exclusively in the cloud. It grants AI agents access to local files, applications, connectors, and the web, enabling them to handle multi-step workflows tailored to each user.

Perplexity frames the shift this way: Personal Computer “takes Computer out of the cloud-only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place.”

The move taps into rising demand for on-device AI agents, a category popularized by tools like OpenClaw. But Perplexity positions its offering as a safer alternative. OpenClaw drew scrutiny over security concerns tied to its broad permissions. By contrast, Personal Computer aims to create a more secure AI computing environment, at least according to the company’s claims.

When first introduced last month, Personal Computer was limited to Perplexity Max subscribers and required joining a waitlist. Now, any Mac user can try the software through the new Perplexity Mac app. The app is free to download, but using Personal Computer requires either a Pro or Max subscription.

At launch, the software can interact with local files, native Mac applications, and the web. It can also coordinate tools, manage files, tap into more than 400 connectors, and apply personal context , all within a secure development environment hosted on Perplexity’s servers. When paired with Perplexity’s AI-powered Comet web browser, it can even operate web-based tools without needing direct connectors.

Because it is designed to run autonomous agents on an always-on device such as a Mac Mini, Personal Computer can be accessed remotely from an iPhone. From there, users can initiate tasks or approve requests while away from their machine.

Perplexity envisions the tool handling a wide range of work, from spreadsheets and documents to complex projects involving multiple file types. Because the agents can work across applications, they might compare two files from different apps or pull notes from one program to create a draft in another.

With this broader rollout, Perplexity plans to deprecate its older Mac app in the coming weeks, shifting focus entirely to the Personal Computer app. The new application is available only as a direct download for now and is not listed in the Mac App Store.
