– Uber and WeRide have launched fully driverless robotaxi services in Dubai, expanding their Middle East operations.
– The service is accessible via the Uber app in specific Dubai districts, including commercial, industrial, and port areas.
– This follows a December pilot program and a recent government permit, marking a shift from supervised, free rides to commercial operations.
– Uber holds a significant stake in WeRide, valued at approximately $150 million, following a $100 million investment and a deepened partnership.
– The partnership model involves Uber managing the ride-hailing network while WeRide provides the autonomous vehicle technology.

A new phase of autonomous mobility has officially begun in Dubai. Uber and the Chinese self-driving technology firm WeRide have launched a fully driverless robotaxi service, marking a significant expansion of their partnership in the Middle East. This commercial service, available through the Uber app, operates without a human safety driver in the vehicle.

The service area includes key commercial and industrial zones such as Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Investment Park Second, and Jabal Ali Industrial First. It also extends to suburban neighborhoods and the strategic Al Hamriya Port. Local operations are managed by Tawasul, a UAE-based mobility and fleet operator. This launch follows a pilot program initiated last December, which offered free rides with a safety operator present. The companies received their official driverless vehicle trial permit from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority last month.

This deployment highlights the deepening strategic relationship between the two companies. Uber holds a 5.82% stake in WeRide, a position solidified by a $100 million investment last year. Based on WeRide’s closing stock price this Monday, that equity is valued at approximately $150 million. In May of last year, Uber further increased its investment as part of a broader commercial agreement to introduce robotaxi services to 15 additional cities globally within five years, with planned expansions into Europe.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, described the launch as a critical step toward making autonomous mobility a global reality. He emphasized the company’s vision for a hybrid world where human drivers and autonomous vehicles work together to create a more resilient transportation network. “This launch underscores our deep commitment to the UAE,” Maredia stated, adding that Uber aims to ensure seamless and confident mobility for people, especially during challenging regional times.

The operational model mirrors Uber’s existing partnership with Waymo. Uber manages the ride-hailing network, customer interface, and fleet logistics through its app, while WeRide remains solely responsible for the autonomous vehicle technology powering the driverless cars. This collaboration represents a major step in bringing scalable robotaxi operations to one of the world’s most forward-looking cities.
