For gamers and sneakerheads alike, the ultimate fusion of retro style and classic entertainment has arrived with the AIR SNES, a custom pair of Nike Air Max 90s that doubles as a fully functional Super Nintendo console. Created by designer Gustavo Bonzanini to mark the 35th anniversary of the Super Famicom’s Japanese debut, these sneakers pay tribute to both ‘90s fashion and the golden era of 16-bit gaming. While other gaming-themed footwear exists, such as Bull Airs’ ShoeBoys, Bonzanini’s design stands apart by actually letting you play vintage titles on the go.

Given the large size of the original Super Nintendo hardware and its bulky cartridges, shrinking the actual console components to fit inside a wearable shoe proved impractical. Instead, the designer turned to emulation, embedding a compact Raspberry Pi Zero W inside the sneaker. This tiny computer runs a customized version of the RetroPie emulator, which not only plays SNES games flawlessly but also features a user interface designed to match the sneaker’s aesthetic.

All the electronic components, including a small rechargeable battery, are housed in the shoe’s tongue rather than the sole. The battery provides up to thirty minutes of gameplay before needing a recharge. Although the Raspberry Pi includes a Mini HDMI port, Bonzanini added an analog converter so the AIR SNES can connect to a television using classic RCA cables, a deliberate choice to make the setup feel authentically retro, as if it could have existed in 1990.

To complete the nostalgic experience, the sneakers support wireless gameplay with an original SNES controller. Bonzanini upgraded the vintage gamepad using an 8BitDo Bluetooth mod kit, allowing it to connect seamlessly to the Raspberry Pi without any cables. This thoughtful modification preserves the feel of the original controller while embracing modern wireless convenience.

Given the booming interest in both retro gaming collectibles and sneaker culture, it’s easy to imagine high demand for a product like the AIR SNES. However, this unique creation remains a one-off prototype. There are currently no plans to mass-produce or sell these custom sneakers, making them a singular tribute to gaming history and footwear design.
