Apple has officially launched the new MacBook Air featuring the powerful M5 chip, redefining the standard for portable computing. This latest iteration of the world’s most popular laptop delivers a significant leap in performance, especially for AI-driven tasks, alongside double the starting storage and enhanced wireless connectivity. All of this is packed into the iconic thin, light, and durable aluminum design that users expect, making it an exceptional tool for students, creative professionals, and business users alike.
John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, stated that the M5 chip enables the MacBook Air to power through a wide range of tasks, from everyday productivity to creative workloads, with even faster AI performance. The new model now comes standard with 512GB of storage, double the previous generation, and can be configured with up to 4TB for the first time. Apple’s new N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for superior connectivity. Available in 13- and 15-inch models in sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver, the MacBook Air with M5 is available for pre-order starting March 4, with availability beginning March 11.
The heart of this upgrade is the remarkable M5 chip. It features a 10-core CPU, including what Apple calls the world’s fastest CPU core, for enhanced responsiveness. Its up-to-10-core GPU includes a powerful Neural Accelerator in each core, enabling AI tasks to run up to four times faster than on the M4 model and up to 9.5 times faster than the original M1 MacBook Air. This makes it a capable platform for leveraging Apple Intelligence across applications or running large language models directly on the device. With a third-generation ray-tracing engine and faster unified memory offering 153GB/s of bandwidth, the M5 also supercharges gaming, 3D rendering in applications like Blender, and complex image processing in apps such as Affinity.
Beyond raw processing power, the new MacBook Air offers tremendous practical value. The doubled starting storage of 512GB is complemented by a faster SSD that delivers twice the read/write performance of the prior generation, significantly speeding up workflows like importing large photo libraries. The stunning Liquid Retina display, up to 18 hours of battery life, and a fanless design remain key features. The laptop also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, an immersive sound system with Spatial Audio, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports that support connecting up to two external displays.
The experience is completed by macOS Tahoe, which introduces a personalized design with Liquid Glass and deeper integration of Apple Intelligence. Features include Live Translation in Messages, smarter Reminders, and more powerful Shortcuts that can automate complex tasks. Continuity features like the Phone app on Mac and iPhone Mirroring further bridge the gap between devices.
Apple has also emphasized the environmental credentials of the new MacBook Air. It is constructed with 55 percent recycled content, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. The manufacturing process utilizes 50 percent renewable electricity, and the packaging is 100 percent fiber-based.
Pricing for the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 starts at $1,099 ($999 for education), while the 15-inch model starts at $1,299 ($1,199 for education). Customers can take advantage of Apple Trade In, AppleCard monthly installment plans, and AppleCare+ for extended coverage and support.
