I Tested ChatGPT Images 2.0 to Redesign My App UIs

▼ Summary
– ChatGPT Images 2.0 redesigned two active product UIs in minutes, identifying design issues and suggesting practical fixes the author plans to use.
– For a Mac app, the AI added clearer headers, better spacing, a favorites option, and a persistent date field, though it removed the original colored buttons.
– For a web interface, ChatGPT autonomously analyzed the page’s weak visual hierarchy and recommended a cleaner “modern admin aesthetic” with white cards and consistent accent colors.
– The AI produced a redesigned web mockup that included a logo, prioritized user-help zones, and added a site status section the author now wants to implement.
– The author calls this capability game-changing for solo developers, as it provided actionable, peer-review-level design feedback for $20 that would otherwise require a week of team work.
I’ve spent the last week putting OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.0 through its paces, and I’m convinced this update is far more significant than it first appears. While earlier AI image generators could produce pretty pictures and a few clever tricks , along with plenty of slop , they lacked deep understanding of what they were creating. Images 2.0 changes that by adding genuine subject-matter intelligence to the generation process. Now, ChatGPT can receive a real assignment and deliver high-value, actionable output.
To test this, I fed two active product user interfaces into ChatGPT Images 2.0 on my $20/month ChatGPT Plus plan. In minutes, the AI returned redesigned UIs packed with practical improvements I plan to incorporate. For solo developers, this kind of AI-powered design review could be a game-changer.
Let’s walk through the results.
Mac interface design
My first test was a Mac app I’ve been vibe coding with Claude Code since January. Progress has been slow , just an hour or two a week , because the app uses macOS’s internal AI for image processing. I uploaded a screenshot of the current UI and gave the prompt: “Redesign this user interface to make it more attractive and easier to use.”
At first, I wasn’t sold on the result. The most obvious change was the loss of the colored buttons I’d carefully matched to my wife’s e-commerce brand. The AI also missed that my grid view has viewing options at the bottom. But looking closer, I found five design notes I genuinely want to adopt:
- The action icons on the lower left , originally icons in the iPhone app , look far better in the AI’s layout.Having a mockup like this makes it much easier to show Claude Code what I want. This is a perfect example of using the $20/month ChatGPT Plus plan alongside the $100/month Claude Code Max 5x plan to build better software.Web interface designNext, I tested the starting page for my security product. My current design is clean but rudimentary , largely because I dislike coding in CSS. Last fall, I used OpenAI’s Codex to redesign it from fairly ugly to unobjectionable. This week, I pasted the screenshot into ChatGPT but accidentally hit return before giving a prompt. ChatGPT took the initiative, analyzing the page on its own.It identified “weak visual hierarchy, too much gray, a very long intro block, and three lower cards that compete equally for attention even though they are not equally important.” It recommended a more modern admin aesthetic: white card backgrounds, softer borders, more spacing, a consistent accent color, shorter line lengths, and better contrast.I then instructed it to “Provide me an image of the redefined interface.” The AI produced a design that included several features I liked:
- The overall design aesthetic was clean and professional, though propagating it through a giant product would take work. This is game-changingI believe this capability is as transformative as ChatGPT’s original launch and the arrival of agentic pair programming. I submitted two product UIs and received peer-reviewed commentary with prototype designs , essentially a design review that would take a full in-house team a week to produce. The payroll alone would be substantial. For $20, I got two helpful, constructive redesigns with actionable nuggets that will make my products better. Just wow.If you were pairing ChatGPT Images 2.0 with Claude Code or Codex, would you use the image mockup as a design brief for the coding agent? Let us know in the comments below.
