Apple’s Foldable iPhone Launch May Be Delayed

▼ Summary

– Apple’s first foldable iPhone launch may be delayed until 2027 due to prolonged decisions on design elements like the hinge.
– The foldable iPhone is expected to have a 7.58-inch inner display and a 5.38-inch outer display.
– Production estimates for foldable iPhone display panels have decreased from 13 million to 9 million units, with a potential 2026 launch still possible.
– Apple plans to delay the iPhone 18 launch to spring 2027 and release other models like the iPhone 18 Pro in fall 2026, possibly alongside the foldable iPhone.
– Apple is developing new technology for the iPhone 19 lineup and may release a cheaper second foldable iPhone in 2027, while also working on an 18.9-inch foldable MacBook for 2028 or later.

Industry analysts now suggest that Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone may not reach consumers until 2027, a potential shift from earlier projections. This revised timeline comes from a recent assessment by Japan’s Mizuho Securities, which points to extended internal discussions over essential design features, particularly the hinge mechanism. The anticipated device is rumored to include a 7.58-inch interior screen complemented by a 5.38-inch cover display.

Alongside the possible launch delay, forecasts for display panel manufacturing have also been adjusted downward. Initial estimates placed production at 13 million units, but that figure has now been lowered to approximately nine million. While a 2026 debut remains feasible, such a timeline could result in a significant shortfall, with finished device output lagging behind panel availability by five to seven million units in the first year.

The same financial group has also supported earlier accounts that Apple intends to postpone the iPhone 18 series, moving its release to spring 2027. It is expected to be introduced together with a model referred to as the iPhone 18e. Meanwhile, the iPhone Air 2, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max are still slated for a fall 2026 launch, which could coincide with the first foldable iPhone if it avoids further postponement.

Looking further ahead, Apple is reportedly preparing unique innovations for the iPhone 19 series, framing it as a landmark release to celebrate the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. In addition, the company is expected to reduce the price of its second-generation foldable iPhone, which is tentatively scheduled for a fall 2027 release, assuming the first model stays on track.

Beyond smartphones, Mizuho Securities indicated renewed activity within Apple’s supply chain focusing on an 18.9-inch foldable MacBook. Development for this product is reportedly advancing, with a possible launch window around 2028 or 2029 at the earliest.
