iOS 28 Reportedly a Major Leap Over iOS 27

With Apple’s official unveiling of iOS 27 still a week away, early whispers about its successor have already begun circulating. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 28 is poised to be a far more substantial update than the upcoming iOS 27.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote, “Next year’s ’28’ releases are already shaping up to be far more significant than the ’27’ updates.” He revealed that iOS 28 carries the internal codename “Bell,” while macOS 28 is referred to as “Poppy.”

This next-generation operating system will likely debut on Apple’s redesigned 20th-anniversary iPhone, expected to launch in September of next year. That timing alone suggests iOS 28 will be a landmark release.

By contrast, iOS 27 appears focused on refinement,particularly a revamped Siri and expanded Apple Intelligence features. The update promises the long-awaited personalized version of Siri, equipped with on-screen awareness and deeper understanding of your personal context. At WWDC 2024, Apple demonstrated this by showing Siri answer questions about a user’s mother’s flight and lunch reservation, pulling data from the Mail and Messages apps.

A dedicated Siri app will enable back-and-forth conversations in text or voice modes, closely mirroring chatbot experiences like ChatGPT. Additionally, iOS 27 is expected to introduce a “Search or Ask” feature integrated into the Dynamic Island.

Beyond these enhancements, analysts have compared iOS 27 to Mac OS X Snow Leopard,an update heavily focused on bug fixes and stability improvements rather than flashy new features. If that comparison holds, it’s no surprise that iOS 28 is already being positioned as the more groundbreaking release.
