Microsoft’s latest Xbox update introduces a seamless way to track and resume games across multiple devices, making it easier than ever for players to switch between platforms. The new Play History feature, currently rolling out to Xbox Insiders, provides a unified view of recently played titles regardless of whether they were accessed on console, PC, or a Windows handheld.
On the Xbox home screen, users will now see a “Jump Back In” section displaying games recently played on their current device. While similar functionality already existed for consoles, this marks its debut on the Xbox PC app. More notably, the update adds a dedicated Play History button, positioned at the end of the Jump Back In list or the far right of the console’s recent apps section. This expanded view compiles gameplay activity across all linked devices, eliminating the need to manually search for titles when switching platforms.
For cloud gaming enthusiasts, the Xbox PC app now includes a “cloud playable” filter, allowing players to quickly identify which games can be streamed without downloads. This enhancement aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy of promoting cross-device accessibility, reinforcing the idea that Xbox extends beyond traditional consoles.
To access these features early, gamers can enroll in the Xbox Insider Program by downloading the Xbox Insider app on their console or via the Microsoft Store on PC. Participants can opt into either the Xbox Update Preview or PC Gaming Preview, depending on their preferred platform.
This update arrives as Microsoft continues to expand its multi-device ecosystem. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld PC branded under Xbox, further blurring the lines between console and PC gaming. However, the announcement follows recent layoffs affecting nearly 9,000 employees, including key Xbox studio staff, leading to the cancellation of anticipated titles like Perfect Dark and Everwild. Despite these challenges, Microsoft remains focused on refining the player experience through features like Play History, ensuring smoother transitions across its growing gaming ecosystem.
