Google Expands AI Overviews for Select Queries

▼ Summary

– Google has confirmed that AI Overviews will dynamically expand to full detailed responses for certain queries, removing the need for a “Show more” button.
– This expansion pushes down organic search results, making the interface resemble the dedicated AI Mode experience rather than traditional snippets.
– The feature automatically cancels if a user has already started scrolling to prevent them from losing their reading position on the page.
– SEO expert Chris Long noted that this change reveals the AI Mode prompt box by default, signaling a strategic shift toward making AI the primary search interface.
– Industry observers predict this rollout will further reduce click-through rates to external websites as Google retains more user engagement within its own ecosystem.

Google has confirmed that AI Overviews are undergoing a significant structural change for specific search queries. Instead of presenting a condensed snippet, the system will now dynamically expand to display a full detailed response. This update effectively eliminates the need for users to click a “Show more” button and fundamentally alters the layout of the Search Results Page (SERP) by pushing organic results further down without requiring manual scrolling.

The visual result is a SERP that closely resembles AI Mode, diverging from Google’s traditional method of displaying brief AI summaries within standard search results. For eligible queries, the expanded overview provides comprehensive information immediately, removing the friction of additional clicks. However, user experience remains a priority; if a searcher has already begun scrolling past the initial view, Google cancels this expansion to ensure they do not lose their reading position or context.

Regarding the rationale behind this shift, a Google spokesperson stated:

“For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.”

The company argues that this change enhances utility. The spokesperson added:

“Our research has shown that with this dynamic experience, users find Search more helpful and engage deeper in follow-up exploration.”

This development follows observations made earlier this week by industry analyst Chris Long, who highlighted on X that Google is revealing the AI Mode prompt box by default for certain searches. Long characterized this as a strategic move to establish AI Mode as the primary search interface. He wrote:

“Holy moly SEOs: Google is now revealing the AI Mode prompt box BY DEFAULT for some queries.”

He continued:

“This is how Google continues to push AI Mode as the default search experience.”

The implications for digital visibility are substantial. If organic traffic is already impacted by standard AI Overviews, this full-screen expansion threatens to reduce click-through rates even further. While Google recently introduced link carousels for developing topics in both AI Mode and AI Overviews, these features are unlikely to mitigate the loss of engagement for queries that trigger the fully expanded answer.

Google has not disclosed what percentage of total queries are currently affected by this rollout or provided a timeline for broader implementation. Nevertheless, the trajectory suggests an incremental approach toward replacing traditional search results. As Google takes these steady steps, the long-term expectation is that AI Mode will eventually dominate the core search experience.
