Segway Myon Electric Bike Review: Smart Tech or Overkill?

▼ Summary

– The Segway Myon ebike’s cockpit has 11 controls (buttons, toggles, switches, and a throttle), making it feel like a small aircraft’s control panel and initially distracting to ride.
– The author nearly collided with a car during the first test ride due to being overwhelmed by the bike’s options.
– After reading the instructions and practicing, the author found the Myon has useful features that boost visibility, rideability, and theft protection.
– The Myon is UL 2849 certified, meaning its electrical system meets the highest US fire safety standard, though this certification is not yet mandatory for all ebikes in the US.
– UL 2849 certification provides peace of mind and increases the chance that a local bike shop will service the ebike.

Before you hop on a bike, it should be simple enough to master in a few seconds. At least, that’s the ideal. In reality, cracking open the owner’s manual first is often the smarter move. With Segway’s latest Myon electric bike, the handlebars are crowded with so many controls,11 separate buttons, toggles, switches, and a throttle, that it resembles the dashboard of a small plane. During my first ride, I was so preoccupied fiddling with the options that I nearly swerved into a car.

My mistake. After heading home, studying the guide, and taking the Myon out several more times, I realized that once you learn the system, the bike is packed with smart features that boost visibility, improve the riding experience, and make theft much harder.

Safety First

Segway’s focus on protection starts before you even power up the Myon. The bike holds UL 2849 certification, meaning its electrical drivetrain, battery, and charging system have passed the strictest US fire safety standards. You might think every ebike sold in America carries this certification, but that’s not the case, not yet, anyway. Having UL 2849 approval provides genuine peace of mind and makes it far more likely that a local bike shop will agree to service it.
