Sony has found itself in the hot seat after a promotional post for its AI Camera Assistant on the Xperia 1 XIII sparked widespread criticism. Now, the company is stepping in to clarify exactly what the feature does and does not do. According to Sony, the AI does not edit your photos. Instead, it offers suggestions based on factors like lighting, depth, and subject. When you point the camera at something, the system presents four different options for adjusting exposure, color, and background blur.

In its product video, Sony claims the AI Camera Assistant can also recommend “the most photogenic angle.” However, the footage only shows it suggesting that users zoom in , a far cry from actually adjusting the camera’s position or perspective.

The examples Sony shared on X, while an improvement over the May 14th samples, still leave much to be desired. They’re not as washed out as the infamous sandwich shot, nor as over-exposed as the portrait in the meadow. But each of the four suggestions in the grid has its own serious flaws. Suggestion one is far too saturated. Number two appears flat and over-processed. The third makes the food look like it was clumsily Photoshopped into the frame. And the contrast in suggestion four is cranked far beyond what looks natural.

For now, if you own an Xperia 1 XIII, you’re probably better off ignoring the AI Camera Assistant’s recommendations entirely.
