Spotify is rolling out a new verification system designed to cut through the noise of spam, fake profiles, and AI-generated content. Select artists will now see a “Verified by Spotify” badge accompanied by a green checkmark on their profile, signaling that the platform has confirmed a real human being is behind both the music and the account. At least in its initial phase, the program explicitly excludes AI personas or profiles that primarily upload AI-generated music. However, Spotify left the door slightly ajar for future inclusion, acknowledging that “the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving.”

Verification isn’t available to just anyone. Spotify requires evidence of consistent listener activity and engagement over time, which suggests that if an artist hasn’t reached the threshold for royalty payments, the company may not prioritize verifying their page. Instead of asking artists to submit government IDs, Spotify is evaluating activity both on and off its platform. This includes social media presence, merchandise sales, and live concert dates.

According to the company, more than 99% of artists that Spotify listeners actively search for will be verified at launch. That group includes a substantial number of independent acts, not just major-label artists. Verification approvals will continue on a rolling basis going forward.

In addition to the badge, Spotify is beta testing a new feature that presents key artist details in a format it compares to nutritional labels. This streamlined view will surface milestones, album releases, and touring activity in a clean, easy-to-digest layout.
