For book enthusiasts in the United States and the United Kingdom, Spotify is now a direct retail destination for physical books. The streaming giant has activated a new integration with Bookshop.org on its Android app, enabling users to purchase printed publications directly through the platform. Support for iOS is slated to begin next week, marking a significant expansion of Spotify’s ecosystem beyond digital audio.
This move follows a partnership announcement made in February. Andy Hunter, founder and CEO of Bookshop.org, previously expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that Spotify attracts new readers and helps “grow the size of the pie” for the entire publishing industry. The initiative is part of a broader suite of updates designed to create a seamless experience for consumers, allowing them to fluidly move between audiobooks and physical copies.
A key feature receiving a major upgrade is Page Match. This tool, which uses a smartphone’s camera to sync a user’s place in a physical or ebook with the corresponding audiobook, is now expanding to over 30 new languages. French, German, and Swedish are among the additions, making the bridging technology accessible to a much wider global audience. Furthermore, the AI-powered audiobook recap feature, which provides a summary of what a listener has already heard, is now available on Android after launching on iOS last November.
Spotify is also enhancing its discovery tools with an expansion of its Audiobook Charts. These rankings, which highlight trending titles on the platform, are now live in Germany. Additionally, a new dedicated chart for kids and family-friendly audiobooks is launching in the US and UK, helping parents and young listeners find engaging content.
According to Owen Smith, Spotify’s global head of audiobooks, these developments reflect a core mission. “These updates demonstrate our continued ambition to make reading fit into modern life,” Smith said. The goal is to allow users to discover a book as easily as a song or podcast, listen during a commute, use Page Match to switch to a print edition at home, or catch up with a Recap. The overarching strategy is to lower barriers to engagement with books while simultaneously fostering growth for authors and publishers.
