This March saw a significant refresh of Apple’s hardware lineup, with new iPhones, iPads, and Macs arriving in stores. However, this wave of innovation came with a corresponding wave of discontinuations, as the company officially retired 14 different products from its catalog. While many of these items were replaced by their newer counterparts, three notable devices were removed without any direct successor, leaving gaps in their respective categories.

The most prominent discontinuations were the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. These models were predictably succeeded by the new iPhone 15 Pro series. Similarly, the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini were phased out, making way for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. In the tablet space, the 10th-generation iPad was discontinued, replaced by a new model with a landscape front camera. The Apple Watch Series 9 in aluminum finishes also reached its end of life, succeeded by the Apple Watch Series 10.

Beyond these expected upgrades, Apple also ceased production on several Mac configurations. The company discontinued the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip, a model that remained on sale even after the M3 version launched last year. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip was also removed, though the M3 Pro and M3 Max variants remain available. In the desktop realm, the Mac Studio with the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips was retired following the introduction of the new M4 model.

The most interesting part of this product purge involves the three items discontinued without replacements. First is the Apple Watch Ultra 2, which was removed from sale entirely. Industry analysts widely expect a new Apple Watch Ultra model to be announced later this year, but for now, the ultra-premium smartwatch segment has no current Apple offering. Second is the Apple TV 4K (128GB), specifically the model with a wired Ethernet port and Thread support. While a Wi-Fi-only version remains, the loss of this specific high-bandwidth model is notable for home theater enthusiasts. Finally, Apple has discontinued the MagSafe Duo Charger, its compact folding travel charger for the iPhone and Apple Watch. No new version of this accessory has been announced, leaving a void for users who valued its portable design.

This strategic pruning highlights Apple’s focus on streamlining its offerings around its latest silicon and design philosophies. The removal of older iPhone and Mac models is a standard annual practice, ensuring the sales focus remains on the newest technology. The discontinuation of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and specific Apple TV model, however, suggests the company is clearing inventory ahead of anticipated fall releases. For consumers, this shift means greater access to the latest M4 and A18 Pro-powered devices, but also the end of the road for some unique products like the MagSafe Duo, at least for the foreseeable future.
