Sony has reportedly initiated a comprehensive survey among game developers to gauge reactions to its decision to phase out physical discs for the PlayStation 5. This move follows intense criticism from fans and industry insiders regarding the console’s shift toward an all-digital ecosystem. The backlash has been significant enough that Sony appears to be actively seeking feedback on how it handles the sale of physical media, despite previous assurances that the transition would proceed regardless of consumer sentiment.

Content creator and showrunner Tom shared details about this internal communication during an appearance on the Broken Silicon Podcast. He described the document as potentially the longest survey Sony has ever distributed to its partners. According to Tom, the questionnaire included indirect inquiries designed to assess whether developers felt there was a problem with the company’s approach to physical distribution.

“There is a survey Sony sent out to developers that is, what I was told by my contacts, a bigger survey than they’ve sent almost ever before, if not ever before. And there was a question in it basically trying to ask in a not-direct way, ‘Is there an issue with how we sell games physically?’ or something, like asking developers for feedback on killing discs.”

Tom noted that major titles like Marvel’s Wolverine continue to see strong sales in physical formats. He suggested that Sony’s outreach might indicate a willingness to reconsider its stance if the feedback proves sufficiently negative. “Wolverine is still selling plenty of physical copies, and you’ve also got Sony starting to ask devs if they are worried about killing physical [discs], suggesting they realize that if they got a bunch of feedback, maybe they would consider some sort of mea culpa on it. We’ll see.”

Developer Sentiment at Gamescom

The report aligns with broader trends observed at recent industry events. As highlighted by Destructoid, multiple reports from gamescom indicated that developers expressed severe displeasure with Sony’s choice to exclude physical drives from future hardware iterations. While specific claims regarding the existence and content of the survey should be viewed with caution until officially confirmed, it is plausible that Sony is testing the waters after hearing such consistent pushback from both the community and creators.

Despite these concerns, corporate leadership has remained steadfast in its commitment to a digital-only future. During a July investor Q&A session, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, addressed the controversy directly. She acknowledged the strength of public opinion but affirmed that the company’s strategic direction remains unchanged.

“We have received various opinions and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forth those views to us. Games are loved by many people. It’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases,” she said through a translator.

“And so we understand those emotions. We want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore.”

While Sony emphasizes its desire to understand and respect the emotional connection gamers have with physical media, it maintains that the focus will remain on optimizing engagement within the digital landscape. The outcome of this developer survey may provide further insight into whether Sony plans to adjust its hardware roadmap or double down on its current trajectory.
