ChatGPT drives 95.1% of AI referral traffic, BrightEdge says

▼ Summary

– ChatGPT dominated AI referral traffic in August with a 95.1% share, marking its highest performance of the year.
– Referral traffic from ChatGPT surged 101% between January and August, significantly outpacing competitors like Gemini and Perplexity.
– BrightEdge data indicates that total referral traffic from AI platforms has grown approximately 73% over the past year.
– The rebound in ChatGPT’s usage is attributed to OpenAI’s strategic improvements following internal warnings issued earlier in the year.
– While other trackers show a fragmented market, BrightEdge highlights ChatGPT’s overwhelming lead in live AI agent activity and crawler visits.

ChatGPT dominates AI referral traffic, capturing 95.1% of all visits driven by AI chatbots to websites in August, according to new analysis from BrightEdge. This figure represents the platform’s highest market share this year and underscores a massive surge in engagement. Between January and August, referral traffic originating from ChatGPT expanded by 101%, signaling a rapid reclamation of digital attention for OpenAI’s flagship product.

While competitors exist, their impact remains negligible in comparison. Gemini secured the second position with just 2.4% of the share, followed by Perplexity at 1.1% and Claude at 0.8%. The disparity is stark: ChatGPT generated approximately 22 times more traffic than these three rivals combined.

A Strong Monthly Rebound

The momentum was particularly evident in August, where ChatGPT’s referral traffic jumped by 36%, marking its largest monthly increase of the year. In contrast, other platforms struggled to maintain growth. Gemini saw a modest 1% rise, while Claude and Perplexity experienced declines of 15% and 17%, respectively.

Despite this acceleration, it is crucial to contextualize the volume. AI tools still direct significantly fewer visitors to websites compared to traditional search engines. However, the overall trajectory is upward. Total referral traffic from AI platforms has grown by roughly 73% in less than a year, indicating that AI is becoming an increasingly vital channel for web discovery.

Jim Yu, BrightEdge’s chief executive and co-founder, highlighted the significance of this trend. He stated, “What stands out now is that ChatGPT isn’t simply taking that share back. It is also sending substantially more users to the web than it was at the beginning of the year.”

BrightEdge attributes this resurgence to strategic improvements made by OpenAI following CEO Sam Altman’s declaration of a “code red” in December. Early data indicated that users were rapidly switching between chatbots based on perceived technological superiority. These enhancements appear to have successfully retained user interest and driven higher outbound traffic.

Dominance Across Multiple Metrics

ChatGPT’s supremacy extends beyond simple referral clicks. BrightEdge’s June data revealed that OpenAI accounted for 96% of live AI agent activity on the web, referring to automated visits made on behalf of users. Furthermore, OpenAI was responsible for approximately half of the visits conducted by AI crawlers used to train models and build search indexes.

The data also illustrates the growing role of automation in web interactions. AI agents now generate about 88 requests for every 100 visits from standard search traffic, highlighting the increasing footprint of automated systems in digital ecosystems.

However, not all analytics firms view the market as consolidated. Similarweb reported in July that AI search is fragmenting across a wider array of assistants. For instance, Gemini reached one billion monthly users in August, while ChatGPT achieved the same milestone in June. This suggests that while ChatGPT leads in referral traffic, the broader landscape of AI adoption is becoming more diverse.

BrightEdge provides tools that help brands monitor their visibility within ChatGPT and other AI engines. Their previous research noted significant influence patterns, such as Google’s AI citing Facebook in 19.5 million answers, underscoring the complex interplay between major tech platforms and emerging AI interfaces.
